If you're looking for one of the most creative things to do in Chania, join us for a unique Paint & Sip event with PaintingCrete. Offering a variety of fun and relaxing painting workshops in some of the most beautiful settings around the city. One guest described it as "one of the most memorable evenings during our holiday in Crete."
Choose from inspiring locations like Chania Old Town, a sunlit beach, lively Agia Marina, a stunning local winery, or even the comfort of your own holiday accommodation. Each session is fully guided step-by-step—“Hannah walks you through everything, so even if you’ve never painted before, you leave with something you’re proud of.”
As your host, I make sure every guest feels relaxed, supported, and inspired—whether it's your first time painting or you’re an experienced painter. PaintingCrete keeps the atmosphere light, fun, and full of creative energy.
All materials are included, along with a welcome drink. At our winery events, you’ll enjoy a winery tour before settling in to a five wine tasting and painting session among the vines. As one review put it, “It’s the perfect combination of wine, laughter, and creativity in a dreamy Cretan setting.”
PaintingCrete regularly hosts workshops at some of Crete’s most scenic wineries, including Manousakis Winery in Vatolakkos (www.manousakiswinery.com) and Dourakis Winery near Vrises (https://dourakiswinery.gr). 2. Mosaic Making in Chania
If you're in the mood for something calm and creative, mosaic making is such a lovely way to spend a few hours in Chania. There’s a beautiful little workshop just outside the city run by a mother and daughter—Marinella and Irini—who are both incredibly kind and welcoming.
The space is relaxed, filled with natural light, and they guide you through everything step by step. One guest described it as “a completely beautiful, interesting and fun experience”, while another noted the “magical view and a relaxing and fun activity” from the terrace overlooking Chania bay marinella-mosaic-workshop.com+9tripadvisor.com+9tripadvisor.com.sg+9.
You don’t need any experience at all. You’ll work with ceramic, glass, and little pieces of stone to create your own mosaic artwork to take home. It could be something small and simple, or a more detailed piece depending on how long you want to stay. Either way, it’s a meaningful souvenir—and one that you actually made yourself.
It’s such a peaceful, hands-on break from sightseeing or beach days, and makes for a memorable experience—especially if you enjoy slowing down and doing something a bit different.
Tip: The workshop is located in Kounoupidiana, about 15 minutes outside Chania city centre. It’s best to book in advance via their website or by messaging them on Instagram—search “Marinella Mosaic Workshop.”

3. Ring-Making Experience in Chania
This experience is especially dear to me. My husband and I took part in the ring-making workshop at Manousakis Winery, and it became one of the most unforgettable experiences. Hosted by the talented and patient silversmith Wesley, you get hands-on crafting your own silver ring—filing, stamping, shaping, and polishing each piece yourself.
What makes it extra special is that my husband used the workshop as a clever way to figure out my ring size… so he could get my engagement ring made by Wesley and he proposed to me in Santorini!
So for us, this turned out to be the beginning of the best surprise ever!
Beyond our personal story, guests often share how meaningful and unique the experience is. One review said, “Wesley created a great atmosphere and we learned a lot… we were able to create the perfect souvenir of the holiday ourselves.” Another called it “such a unique experience; he’s extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Can’t recommend doing this enough to anyone visiting Crete!” tripadvisor.com+6airbnb.co.uk+6airbnb.com+6
Even if there isn’t a proposal involved, the setting is magical—vineyards, a glass of Amazing Cretan wine in hand, serene mountain views, and a creative activity that delays time in the best possible way.

4. Pottery Class in Chania
There are many beautiful pottery classes and studios around Chania, each offering something unique. If you're up for a little adventure, you could take a day trip to the fairy-tale village of Margarites, tucked into the hills just outside Rethymno. It’s a peaceful, charming town known across Crete for its rich pottery tradition—many of the ceramic artists in the region have roots there. The village is full of winding cobblestone lanes, colorful workshop doors, and talented artisans crafting everything from Minoan-style pots to bold, modern designs.
That said, if you prefer to stay close to the heart of the city, my personal favorite pottery class is right here in Chania Old Town—offering a hands-on, intimate experience with a local artist in one of the most atmospheric corners of the city.
Flakatoras Ceramics is a true hidden gem. This family-run pottery studio and shop has been creating beautiful ceramics for generations, and it shows in every detail of their work. Each member of the Flakatoras family brings their own unique style and skill to the table—some specialize in wheel-throwing, others in hand-building or glazing—making their collection incredibly diverse and full of character.
What makes this place really special is how warm and welcoming they are. You’re not just browsing a shop—you’re stepping into their family story. And if you’re feeling inspired, they also offer hands-on pottery classes, where you can sit at the wheel or do some pottery decorating by hand and under the guidance of a true expert.
What really stands out is their warm hospitality and passion for the craft. As one guest shared:
“A charming little store. Took a wheel throwing class… The family that owns this shop are the best people you’ll meet!… Very knowledgeable. Kind and patient. 10/10 recommend!” tripadvisor.de+15tripadvisor.com.au+15no.tripadvisor.com+15
Another reviewer described their workshop as:
“One of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had! We created two great pieces of ceramics… very reasonably priced but more importantly a really fun session.” tripadvisor.com.au+3tripadvisor.co.uk+3tripadvisor.ca+3tripadvisor.ca+2tripadvisor.com+2tripadvisor.co.uk+2
It’s a creative and personal experience, right in the heart of Chania. And the best part? You get to take home your own handmade ceramic piece—a little reminder of your time spent creating something special on this beautiful island.

5. Visit The Beautiful MaGea Creative Residence
Just a few minutes’ drive outside of Chania Town, you’ll find the peaceful and inspiring MaGea Creative Residence—a beautiful estate surrounded by olive trees and filled with warmth. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed by Eugenia, one of the kindest and most open-hearted people I’ve met in Crete. She’s deeply spiritual, incredibly creative, and genuinely loves connecting with people from around the world.
I’ve been to MaGea a few times now, and every visit feels like a breath of fresh air. Eugenia hosts a wide variety of workshops here—everything from mindfulness and painting to yoga, mindful walks, and traditional Cretan cooking. I once joined a seasonal cooking class where we learned to make Greek Easter dishes together in a lively, laughter-filled kitchen. We left with flour on our hands, full hearts, and a tray of warm kalitsounia.
Guests consistently describe MaGea as a place of healing, creativity, and connection. One reviewer wrote, “We had an amazing three weeks… above all, the hospitality we received from Eugenia. She is a born host and will make you feel like family.” Another shared, “The location is just incredible… and Eugenia is the sweetest, most kind woman who shares tips, ideas, and so much knowledge about Crete.”
Whether you're coming for a one-off workshop or a full retreat, MaGea is a space that welcomes and inspires. If you’re looking for something creative and meaningful just outside the city, this place is a must.
